Champs & Defending National Champions
The task for Head Coach Jim Calhoun and his Huskies in 2004-05 appears to be a daunting one. The road ahead for a defending
national champion is bound to be a bumpy one, especially when trying to replace three standout performers, 1,000-point scorers
each, two (Ben Gordon & Emeka Okafor) of whom were NBA lottery picks and the third is the
school's all-time assist leader.
Despite those facts, UConn's run to the 2004 National Championship showed that the cupboard is
certainly not bare in Storrs. Competition among the returnees will be fierce, including several players who played a significant role in
the title run. Add in a group of players that includes multiple high school All-Americans and players that have already proven
themselves at the highest level of college basketball and it becomes clear that, despite having a young team with no
scholarship seniors, Coach Calhoun and his Huskies will again be a regular in the national rankings and well into tournament time in
March and April at a chance to repeat.
